JR

JR’s entrance into the cypher is rarely quiet—it’s almost always met with shouts from the community: “South Side!!! Zone 3!” JR carries the Southside with him everywhere he goes—and as an original member of Soul Food Cypher, he’s just as committed to the community within that circle as he is to the one that raised him.

Born and raised in Atlanta, JR grew up on the Southside between College Park and Zone 3—areas layered with history, culture, and resilience. As a minister’s kid and an only child, he was constantly surrounded by people, but often felt disconnected, like his thoughts didn’t fully translate to the world around him.

The arts became his way in.

Through church plays, performances, and poetry, JR found a way to connect—first with others, but more importantly with himself. By middle school, his writing evolved into songwriting, leading to his first rap and a church-formed group. Creativity wasn’t just something he did—it became how he processed life.

But it wasn’t until Soul Food Cypher that everything shifted.

JR was first discovered by Soul Food Cypher in 2012, when founder Alex saw him battling MCs at a music festival. That moment led him into the cypher—and into a space that would redefine his life forever. Those early sessions weren’t just about rapping—they were therapy. A place to release pressure, to process emotions, and to show up fully without judgment. Month after month, he kept coming back, often rearranging his life just to be in the room.

He didn’t miss a cypher for the next 12 years.

When asked about SFC’s personal impact, JR  shared how it introduced him to a form of Black excellence that expanded beyond the narrow paths he had seen growing up. It showed him that creativity, vulnerability, and brotherhood could exist in the same space. It gave him a vision for a life that felt fulfilling. And it gave him something he had never had: big brothers.

Figures like Alex, Ro the Nerd, Neon Deion, Markmont, and Luke became more than peers—they became mentors. They showed him how to grow, how to lead, and how to build something that lasts. That influence didn’t just shape his time in the cypher—it shaped who he became outside of it.

Inspired by that environment, JR expanded his role beyond being an artist. He pursued audio engineering and was given his first live event production opportunity through SFC, which eventually led him to start his own business.

The cypher didn’t just develop his talent—it developed him as a man.

Now, that same energy comes back through him.

No longer the youngest in the room, JR has stepped into the role of big brother himself. He pours into newer members, challenges them to grow, and reminds them not to get comfortable. His mindset is simple: always evolve. Always push yourself.

That shows up in his style.

JR’s approach to the cypher is rooted in authenticity. His bars carry the texture of Zone 3—its stories, its struggles, its pride. But more than anything, he’s committed to being himself. Never chasing a sound, never settling into comfort—always pushing to do something new each time he steps in the circle.

Because for him, impact matters more than recognition.

One moment made that clear. Someone once told him, “I started freestyling because I saw you—watching you challenge yourself and have fun with it.” That moment stuck with him deeply. It reminded him that what he does in the cypher reaches beyond the room.

That’s what drives him. To show up fully. To create space for others to do the same.

Growing up, JR was surrounded by the legacy of Atlanta—walking the same halls once walked by Jermaine Dupri, Ludacris, and Big Boi, living just blocks from where André 3000 grew up, and moving through the same streets once walked by MLK, Jesse Jackson, and Ralph Abernathy. He remembers walking miles just to get to the store, the moment he could finally afford a Breeze card, and moving between College Park and his grandmother’s house in Zone 3. It constantly reminds him of where he came from, who he is—and what he chose not to become. That awareness keeps him grounded and grateful. Community is everything to him, and he carries that everywhere he goes.

In the same way, Soul Food Cypher became home. And JR carries that home with him too. Over time, he has become a cornerstone of the cypher itself—helping shape its culture, energy, and sense of family. That same soil that raised him continues to shape him as he grows, while also helping others do the same. Rather than chasing anyone else’s path, JR has focused on becoming fully himself—and in doing so, he’s helped define what Soul Food Cypher is and what it stands for.

JR is Atlanta, and JR is Soul Food Cypher.
