Joe Stu
Joe Stu always has a story to tell often from an unexpected perspective, a conscious message with a bit of humor and Bronx grit.
Joe was born in the Bronx during the birth of Hip Hop, where he was steeped in the elements.. He wrote his first graffiti tag in kindergarten, breakdanced with Rock Steady Crew, and watched Melle Mel rock block parties. He first fell in love with breakdancing, but began rapping in fifth grade, eventually drawing inspiration from Tribe Called Quest, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, and Redman. Hip hop became his therapy offering an outlet and a sense of identity and confidence.
After college, Joe chased the industry grind—releasing mixtapes, opening for acts like Talib Kweli and Naughty by Nature, and hitting open mics across Atlanta and surrounding states in the southeast.. As time went on, his definitions of success started to shift. it wasn’t about preconceived notions of making it, it was about impact and authenticity– about telling untold stories from the diaspora, perspectives not often heard in music with the aim to heal, teach and entertain with a purpose.
When he found Soul Food Cypher, he felt relief—he had discovered a community that aligned with his purpose. It saved his craft by giving him a space to continue doing what he loved outside of the industry grind and caused him to fall in love with the process of getting better.
Joe’s style reflects his growth: braggadocious yet conscious, gritty with intention, and rich in storytelling. Every verse carries a message, a punchline, or a truth that makes you think. As an educator, he now teaches hip hop culture and visual art from grade school to college students at Clark Atlanta. He’s also passing the torch—his son Nassir, who first fell in love with break dancing at Soul Food Cypher, now performs in competitions and arenas. Joe Stu is a living embodiment of the mission of Soul Food Cypher and is truly making an impact through his authenticity.
